  1. The photo I will be examining is the one with the Christmas lights, in his listing of his top ten photos. It depicts a strand of generic looking Christmas lights along a wall, with each of the bulbs along the strand alternating in direction as it recedes into the upper right corner of the frame. The light is contrasted by the deep shadows in the opposite corners; the photo was taken in a darkened room with no flash.

Considering the simplicity of the subject matter, the composition is very well done. The strand of lights makes a diagonal line across the upper half of the photo, receding into the distance. The bright lights blur and create an interesting effect when they grow farther away, and the darkness of the room contrasts greatly with the lights, creating great emphasis and almost star-like reflections.

I see a fascination with light in this piece, and how the camera captures it differently than the human eye. The contrast it creates in darkness is interesting, and pleasing to capture. A simple theme, but one that can be universally appreciated.

I really like the composition; it leads the eye and shows great depth of field. The alternating directions of each of the bulbs also adds something of an intriguing flair to the design. It's a simple piece, but very vibrant and well-done overall.

  2. You seem to be very interested in form and shape. On your post from last week I was intrigued by the photo of the negative space between two handrails. I see a similar perspective in some of these shots as well, paying close attention to the forms of the objects that you capture. You do a great job of paying attention to these formal details. I would like to see you capture more natural elements as well in the outdoors or perhaps a less intimate setting as many of your images seem to be coming from a cozy/small apartment, for example take these photos at a mall or busy indoor space.
