  1. In the top ten photos of her choosing, the one I will be examining is the close-up of the hand holding the lipstick. It is obviously the hand of Zoe, the photographer, as it's shown to be set in her apartment. A mirrored door and posters on the wall are seen in the background, which is out of focus. The fingers are shown with the most clarity.

Using depth of field, focus is put on the hand in the foreground, and recedes back along the lipstick. Objects in the background are blurred so as to emphasize the aforementioned foreground objects. The hand is viewed straight-on, while the background tilts at an angle, drawing our gaze more to the central focus. The texture of the nail polish and wrinkles on the fingers heighten the realism of the piece.

The nail polish and lipstick give me the idea of makeup and beautification methods, further influenced by the mirror in the background. Could just be a piece about morning routine, typical makeup application, an examination of different ways humans make themselves look more appealing either to themselves or others... It's an interesting perspective.

Although the subject matter may not be all that interesting, it's a well-done photo, and I enjoy the depth of field and perspective of the piece. I especially like the little shine on one of the fingernails; it adds something. The hand also fills up a good part of the field of view; not too much or too little.
